Lychee Thieves is a short dramatic film directed and written by Kathleen Man and produced by Angie Laprete and Titus Chong. The film centers on four local characters on the island of O’ahu who battle over harvesting rights to a miraculously bountiful lychee fruit tree. Filming will take place in August on O’ahu. _______________________________________________________________________
KEOKI (28-35, Hawaiian): The hero of the film, a man of few words. At first an aimless drifter who lives at home with his mother and can’t hold down a job. By the end of the film, a man who rises to action and finds meaning in his life. He is handsome, rugged, strong, and physically impressive; to some, he is intimidating. Silent and stoic, yet able to be vulnerable and emotional.
ETHEL (40-45, Japanese): A nervous, insecure, middle-aged woman with a son off in college on the mainland. She works as a secretary at a local bank. She is talkative, but doesn’t trust herself sometimes. She speaks proper English at home with her haole husband, but switches to a mild form of Pidgin when at work. She is a follower, not a leader. She is easily frightened and wants to please. She is matronly, yet has a girlish quality.
ARNIE (40-50, Caucasian): He’s from Massachusetts. He holds onto the belief that order, control and stability are the hallmarks of life well lived. His parents divorced when he was young, and he had to raise the rest of his siblings. He prefers to keep to himself. He doesn’t have many friends, and spends most of his time either at work (he’s an accountant) or at home with his wife, Ethel. Long ago, he moved to Hawaii thinking it would be paradise. But he found it to be confusing, slow, hot, and isolating. He has lost the will to try to make friends and broaden his horizons, and yet somewhere deep inside he yearns for acceptance and human contact. His face and body betray a certain lifelessness and depression.
MRS. CHUN (70-85, Chinese): The last of twelve children in a traditional Chinese family, she is the sole living child of her long-dead parents who emigrated from China. She had one son, whom she doted on. She worked two jobs in order to send her son to a prestigious mainland university. She smothered him. When her son married a haole from Chicago, he cut himself off from her. She never recovered. Now a widow and completely alone, she is small, thin and waiting for death.
